7.  Today is Veterans Day, and Americans should be grateful for the sacrifices made by our military veterans in all of the branches of service and in all wars.

Veterans Day used to be known as Armistice Day, and was originally created to commemorate the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.  Congress later created Veterans Day as a legal holiday in 1954 in order to honor American veterans of all wars.

As you enter the cafeteria, you should notice a small round table near the windows.  You should know that the purpose of this small table is to honor a special segment of our nation’s veterans--those held as Prisoners of War or who remain Missing in Action.

The empty table symbolizes the sacred place we hold in our hearts for America’s Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard personnel, as well as civilians who may not have returned home after battle. This small table symbolizes that they are with us though, here in spirit. Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation’s call to serve our country and the cause of freedom.

The meaning of the items on this special table.

The table is round--to show our everlasting concern for our missing men and women.

The tablecloth is white--symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to duty.

The single red rose, displayed in a vase, reminds us of the life of each of the missing, and the loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep the faith, awaiting answers.

The vase is tied with a yellow ribbon, a symbol of our continued determination to account for our missing.

A slice of lemon on the bread plate is to remind us of the bitter fate of those captured and missing in foreign lands.

A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by those missing and their families who seek answers.

The bible represents the strength gained through faith to sustain those lost from our country.

The glass is inverted to symbolize their inability to share in today’s toast and meal.

The chair is empty--the military member is missing.

Today, on Veterans Day, let us remember to honor America’s Prisoners of War and Missing in Action, as well as give thanks for all American Veterans who have sacrificed so much that we may live in a free nation.  Thank you for your time and attention to our Veterans Day commemoration.
