What Does The SLP Do?
Here are some of the tasks that fill the SLP's day......
- Serve students and their parents by providing focused lessons to reach goals and objectives specified on each students' Individualized Educational Plan
- Provide students and their teachers support for regular education learning in the form of adapted lessons, modified-format tests, information on handling communication in the classroom, and alternative communication systems.
- Give standardized, curricular tests to students needing accommodations.
- Check/ troubleshoot problems with FM amplification systems for students with hearing loss.
- Assess students' communication skills and analyze for strengths and weaknesses. Link these skills with those needed for success in the education environment and make recommendations.
- Write reports - assessment, progress, social security questionnaires, and annual report, emails to parents and other professionals working with caseload students.
- Work in regular education classrooms to support student learning, increase carryover of sound production in classroom settings, observe student use of social skills outside therapy setting.
And then there is keeping up with....
- New technology - Smartboard, website, webcam, digital camera
- New techniques / advances in working with students
- New curricula used in regular education classes
- New teachers
This profession requires independent drive, ability to communicate well with everyone, interest in children, patience, and creativity!
